As one of the largest acupuncture and Oriental medicine libraries in the state, the Texas College for Traditional Chinese Medicine's General Shu-Ping Tsao Memorial Library prides itself on its extensive collection of research and learning materials. In addition to several books dealing with a variety of health, science, and Traditional Chinese Medicine topics, the Library also offers access to a large collection of journals, periodicals, and other materials in related fields.
The Library takes particular pride in its collection of Traditional Chinese Medicine journals from China, covering the period from 1982 to present. In many cases, these much sought-after publications are unavailable in any form outside of a small number of specialized private libraries in Asia; our Library derives great satisfaction from being able to assist students, faculty, and staff in the pursuit of their educational and research goals through these unique resources.
In addition to our ever-growing collection of Chinese-language journals and materials, the Library also continues to add and subscribe to over 25 bilingual and English-language journals covering not only Traditional Chinese Medicine, but also Western medicine and related topics. These periodicals range in target audience level from patient to practitioner, allowing students to know what support is available in print for their practice and their patients, and to remain on the cutting edge of this most ancient and yet continuously-developing healing art. Students also enjoy the use of several professional online databases to find articles supporting not only their studies and research, but also their future practice and patient care.
As the research and learning resource for the state's oldest school of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, the largest part of our collection is devoted to medicine and the health sciences, in both their conventional Western and in their Traditional Chinese Medicine aspects. In the interests of providing a complete collection, the Library also has a significant number of volumes devoted to complementary and alternative medicine topics other than acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, and to other fields and subjects necessary for a complete and thorough education of a future practitioner of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. By including the widest possible variety of material on relevant topics, the Library serves to deepen and enhance our student's research and coursework, and helps to establish a solid intellectual and scholarly foundation for the modern practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Books and journals on business management, practice logistics and legal matters round out the collection and augment the students' coursework and reading assignments, helping to prepare students to embark upon their chosen profession as not only highly-trained and skilled practitioners, but also as savvy business managers.
In support of our students, faculty, and staff, the Library also offers access to a wide variety of technological tools, with a copier, internet-connected computers with printers, and a DVD player for use in support of research, coursework preparation, and individual study. Indoor and outdoor reading areas (covered and open) provide a variety of inviting meeting and learning environments, and help to integrate the Library into the College as a whole.
